Brody jolted awake, his internal clock alerting him that something was amiss. His hand searched the nightstand for his phone. He sat up when he couldn’t find it and patted his jeans pockets. Growing frantic, he scanned the room and spotted his jacket on the floor. He crawled out of bed half asleep, strolled over to his jacket, and picked it up off the floor. Retrieving the phone from the pocket, he tossed the jacket onto the bed. He clicked the message icon and smiled at the text from Louann.

Hey, how about lunch? I can stop by with it if you like.

Brody’s heart fluttered at her offer, but he knew he had to talk to her in person. Hoping their upcoming conversation would go smoothly, he decided to take a quick shower first.

Ten minutes later, dressed in casual attire, head freshly shaved, and beard neatly trimmed, he left the room. The aroma of bacon and coffee hit his nose when he reached the landing. His stomach rejected the bacon, but his mouth watered for the coffee. By his standards, breakfast time had passed. He planned to take a few sips then text Louann to meet him at Decadent Sweets and Coffees.

He skidded to a halt when he heard voices coming from the kitchen.

“Brody didn’t tell you about me? We dated for four years. He’s letting me stay here for a while.”

Brody frowned and muttered under his breath, directing his ire at Rachael. It was obvious who she was talking to.

“Where is Brody?” the icy female voice demanded.

Brody shook his head. Why couldn’t he have been wrong? He had intended to reach her first. Now, everything seemed suspicious.

“He’s taking a shower. He’ll be right down,” Rachael replied.

Brody gritted his teeth. Darn it! He’d had enough. “I’m right here,” he announced as he strolled into the kitchen.

Louann looked at him with hurt eyes, and he silently pleaded with her not to jump to conclusions.

“I brought you lunch, but I see you don’t need it. Umm, Rhonda is cooking you a late breakfast.”

“That’s Rachael,” she corrected. “Are you hungry, Brody?”

Not anymore. “No,” he said, eyes fixed on an angry Louann. “I was going to call you.”

“For what?” She stepped forward.

“To talk to you… That’s why I’m dressed. I got your message.”

She looked him up and down. “You look very nice.” Brody knew it wasn’t a compliment but a ruse.

“So do you.” His gaze held hers. “Can we talk?”

“Here’s your lunch.” She shoved the bag at him and stormed out of the kitchen.

Brody didn’t have time to savor the aroma. He set the bag on the island and raced after her. “Wait, Lou!” he yelled. She was already out the door and getting into her car. Brody rushed to the passenger side and climbed in.

“What are you doing? Go back inside; you have a houseguest.”

“I’m aware of who’s in my house. But you’re not leaving until we talk.”

She sighed. “Brody, you don’t owe me an explanation. I’m not your woman, and you’re not my man.
